Here on our new weekly update, we will be recommending arts and culture events currently open in London and Oxford. We'll also be sharing articles from our limited edition print publications past, present and future, so you'll still be able to read contributions from the OSA writers, even if the magazines are sold out.

Based on Walbrook Wharf, right on the edge of the City of London borough boarder and facing out to the River Thames sits a proposal for the City of London Corporation Self-build Programme. The colliding buildings made up of three expo spaces (Estate Agents, Auction Room and Court Room), offices for land registry and planning and a self build workshop aim to provide a more convenient and better way for residents in the City of London to buy, sell and make a home.
The proposal also involves an element of recycling, done via a material bank that is open to all. The materials given in can either be used by those building within the workshop or exchanged by the public to then be taken away.
Once you buy a plot of land within the auction room you are enrolled within the self-build programme giving you access to all the workshop facilities. Once your new self-build home is complete it is docked onto a boat to be transported off of site and the owner gets the privilege to place a personalised brick inscribed with their name on the the facade of the auction room. The hope is that over time the facade will build up with personalised bricks and show the rest of London the progress the City of London Corporation is doing in providing for its residents.

Michaelangelo - Ashmolean Museum
When you look at Michaelangelo’s ceiling at the Sistine Chapel, or at his statue of David, it’s hard to see past the finished product to the artist behind. But the sketches on show in the Ashmolean reveal more of Michaelangelo’s thought process. Strong chalk marks come together on paper to create musculature, facial features, and figures. But in between sketches of the human form are architectural drawings, and it is in those that I found the most of Michaelangelo’s personality.
There are layers to these drawings, the same layers that you create when drawing by hand today. He sets up the proportions, begins on the details, makes corrections, then sketches in the finishing touches. You can follow the narrative of the drawing. And it seems as if, in the 500 years between Michaelangelo’s life and today, very little has changed in the basics of architectural drawing.
This exhibition is very small, but it’s free and well worth a visit. Booking is recommended, although some tickets are available from the ticket desk on the day.
