OSA Magazine is a platform for documenting, sharing and publicising the varied agendas of students at Oxford Brookes School of Architecture.
Here on our new weekly update, we will be recommending arts and culture events currently open in London and Oxford. We'll also be sharing articles from our limited edition print publications past, present and future, so you'll still be able to read contributions from the OSA writers, even if the magazines are sold out.

This collage was created in order to help develop an aesthetic for a Martian architecture. It seeks to explore the edge between the familiarities of Earth and all of the unknown we may encounter, as humans travel further into The Solar System.

Tate Modern until 11th June
Photographer Wolfgang Tillmans asks the important questions at his first exhibition at Tate Modern. Since winning the Turner Prize way back in 2000 Tillmans has been on upward trajectory to the top of his field. The exhibition tries to unpack the complex and uncertain times that we live in, presenting a series of compelling photographs from 2003 (the point at which Tillmans suggests the world changed) to present day. Tillmans photographs engage within the social and political climate through a series of captivating and subtle moments. Where Tillmans succeeds most is in his use of the newly opened “Tanks” that sit beneath the Herzog + de Meuron extension to this cathedral for modern art. He converts the space into an exciting and immersive spectacle of lights, music and photography. A series of live and recorded events (running until 10th March), participants are invited to participate in an experimental sound and light installation, complementing his photographic work and expanding upon his ideas about modern society. Both exhibitions are engaging and very relevant to the testing times that we live in today, providing an opportunity to reflect on everyday choices and their consequences.

Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare

For a true break from architecture, why not take the opportunity to expand your cultural repertoire and see this fantastic reimagining of one of Shakespeare's funniest comedies. After losing her twin brother in a shipwreck off the coast of Illyria, Viola decides that in order to survive she must disguise herself as a boy for her protection. She/he becomes a component in a love triangle between a series of unexpected characters, which leads to hilarious and somewhat melancholic results. One of the most notable elements of this production is the gender fluidity of some of the plays traditionally male characters, Tamsin Greig plays the stoic Malvolia (formerly Malvolio) and Doon Mackichnan takes on the role of court jester Feste both to hilarious effect. Both actors are stalwarts of British comedy and take on the roles as if they are born to play them, truly engaging with the audience. The production also brings Shakespeare to the 21st century with a variety of settings including a tiny swimming pool, a stairway to heaven and most unexpectedly a seedy gay club with a drag queen belting out “to be or not to be”! It successfully makes Shakespeare accessible to the masses. Twelfth night is a great night out and highly recommended to all.
